Ongoing Projects

The Shire Valley Transformation Project (SVTP) is a 14-year program (2018-2031) which will be implemented in three sequential but partially overlapping phases and aims to irrigate 43,370 hectares of land with water abstracted from the Shire River at Kapichira Dam and conveying it by gravity to the irrigable area in Chikwawa and Nsanje Districts through canals. The project is being implemented by the Government of Malawi (GoM) through the Ministry of Agriculture, with support from the World Bank, the African Development Bank, the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

Phase 1 will cover 22,280 hectares and Phase 2 will cover 21,090 hectares.  The 43,370 hectares comprise 29,338 hectares (67.65%) of smallholder farmers and 14,032 hectares (32.35%) of large-scale farmers.
